Learning through observation, problem-solving, and independent discovery.
In this video, a child is working with Montessori Knobbed Cylinders, trying different possibilities, making mistakes, checking again, and gradually finding the correct solution.
At one point, one cylinder is placed incorrectly. The adult notices the mistake but does not tell the child what is wrong. Instead, the misplaced cylinder is simply moved back.
The child continues working and eventually notices that something does not match. Without being given the answer, the child makes the adjustment independently.
Montessori activities are not only about getting the right answer. They also provide children with opportunities to develop the skills they need to approach challenges independently.
Through this kind of hands-on experience, children can practice:
When a child makes a mistake, our natural instinct may be to correct it immediately.
But sometimes, children need time, space, and the opportunity to discover the mistake for themselves.
For educators, the goal is not simply to help children complete an activity. It is to create an environment where children can observe, think, try, adjust, and learn from their own experience.
Because the most valuable answer is sometimes the one a child discovers independently.
